Papal bull on the canonization of Duke Leopold III of Austria, dated "Octauo Idus Ianuary" 1484 (Gregorian 1485), given in Rome at St. Peter's during Pope Innocent VIII's first year.
Imprint and date as given by ISTC, recording alternate attributions to "Printer of the 'Historie S. Rochus'" and Johannes Cassis, with note: "[t]he press of the Printer of the 1482 'Vocabolista' (Stephan Koblinger?) (BMC III 809) is called Drucker der Historie von S. Rochus by Langer-Dolch. Proctor identified the printer as Johannes Cassis, but see BMC." Catalogue of books printed in the XVth century now in the British Museum (=BMC), III, 809 (headnote) relates that Cassis was a publisher, not a printer, and identifies Koblinger as the printer, who "most probably started the present press at Vienna with type that he had brought with him from Italy."
Type: 86 G. 34 lines, 145 x 80 mm. Hand-stamped woodcut initial I in 5-line capital space on page [1]; variant: guide letter 'i' in the same space. Perhaps intended to produce both finished copies and copies to which a manuscript initial could be added.
Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke records variant states in three separate records.
"Many of the copies listed are from a cache of unbound and uncut copies discovered in Austria in the 1920s" (Incunabula short title catalogue).
