Biographical / Historical Note
Spinelli family members were active in the Silk Guild in Florence from the thirteenth century on; operated in international banking in the fifteenth century; held diplomatic positions in the sixteenth; and remained active in Florentine state affairs into the eighteenth century.
Summary
The papers document the lives and careers of members of a prominent Florentine family, the Spinelli, and several related families. The bulk of the material dates from ca. 1440 to ca. 1750, and includes personal and professional correspondence; personal, household and business accounts and financial records; personal and family papers, including marriage contracts, inventories, wills, ricordanze, and genealogical information; legal records, and other papers.
Among the individuals represented in the collection are: Tommaso Spinelli (1397-1472), papal banker during the reigns of Eugenius IV and Calixtus III and patron of Santa Croce; his grandsons Tommaso (1472-1522)and Lionardo (1473-1532), respectively Henry VIII's ambassador to the court of Charles V and papal chamberlain and emissary to the court of Henry VIII; Benedetto Spinelli (1483-1547), silk merchant and podesta of Castiglion Fiorentino; and Buonsignore Spinelli (1645-1711), member of the Senate.
The archive also holds some of the personal papers of Giorgio Vasari, including his will, catalogues of paintings produced and owned, and accounts, as well as material relating to Buonsignore Spinelli's role as executor of the Vasari estate.
