Three holograph journals documenting Hoyt's second, third and fourth trips from Templeton, Massachusetts to the Georgetown, Colorado area to conduct business relating to his mining interests between 1867 and 1882. Entries in the journal dated Jun 13-Jul 27, 1867, describe his travel by railroad and stagecoach from Massachusetts to Colorado via Chicago, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Omaha and Platt Station, Nebraska, and Denver; his concern about potential attacks by Indians; his visit with his adult son Charles in Central City, Colorado; his tours of mining areas and subsequent purchase of lodes near Georgetown, Colorado; and his return trip via Michigan and Canada. Volume includes miscellaneous pencil sketches.
In addition to descriptions of his travel to Colorado from Massachusetts, and his mining business in the Georgetown area, the journal dated Dec 16, 1878-Feb 16,1879, contains two letters from his son Charles (Jan 26 and Apr 3, 1879) regarding his decision to settle in Omaha, Nebraska; a letter from Laura Josephine Briggs Hoyt, who was married to Charles Hoyt, (Jan 19, 1879) regarding family matters; several letters written to, and copies of letters written by Arthur W. Hoyt, regarding mining interests including the Blue Jacket Mining Company; newspaper clippings; and miscellaneous pencil sketches of mining sites. The journal dated Nov 9-Dec 25, 1882, contains entries similar to those in the previous volume. There are also clippings of railroad route maps; miscellaneous printed items; manuscript copies of warranty deeds, quit claim deeds and other documents relating to the Blue Jacket Mining Company, the Cashier Silver Company, and other mining concerns.
