ALS written by John B. Floyd, Secretary of War, to Benjamin Stanton, Chairman, Committee on Military Affairs, United States House of Representatives. Floyd's letter transmits an ALS written to him from Adjutant General Samuel Cooper, replying to the Committee's inquiry on the existence of Indian hostilities in Utah Territory in 1853. Cooper's letter, dated at Washington, Mar 19, 1860, briefly reports that the only incident recorded was the killing of Captain J.W. Gunnison and members of his exploring party by Indians on Oct 26, 1853. The letter refers to an appended official account of the incident, which is not present.
