Videotape testimony of Mikulas H., who was born in Levoča, Czechoslovakia in 1921. He recounts his parents' and grandparents histories; their assimilated lifestyle; volunteering for the Czech army in September 1938; Slovak independence in March 1939; anti-Jewish laws resulting in his expulsion from university; conscription into the Sixth Slovak Brigade for forced labor in September 1941; assignments in Humenné, Vranov, and Svätý Jur; learning of his parents' deportation in 1942; deserting using false papers; resistance activities; observing a cattle train of Jews from Salonika at the station in Sered; brief imprisonment for desertion; joining partisans in the uprising in September 1944 in Banská Bystrica; hiding in the forests; demobilization in March 1945; returning to Levoča in April; working in Košice; changing his name to be less "German" sounding; briefly attending university in Prague; and emigration to the United States in February 1946 to join an uncle. Mr. H. discusses a great deal of historical background; continuing contacts with a few people from his hometown and from the Sixth Brigade; and sharing his experiences with one daughter.
