Summary
Videotape testimony of Joseph W., who was born in Chrzanów, Poland in 1927. He recalls in great detail his life in a close, extended Hasidic family; attending Jewish school; German invasion; traveling with his uncle and mother to Kraków (his father and older brother remained and perished); bombardments; traveling to Przemyśl; his friend's murder by a German soldier for stealing bread; smuggling themselves to the Soviet zone; living in Zvur; his bar mitzvah attended only by his uncle; evacuation by the Soviet Army to Korostylëvka; moving to Kzyl-Orda; living with a Russian couple; attending school (his mother worked in a rice factory); declining an offer to study in Moscow fearing he could not return home; antisemitic Russians; religious observances by their Jewish community; food shortages; his uncle's death from typhoid; war's end; their return to Kraków via Płaszów; trying to smuggle a Polish boy in with them; reunion with a cousin; living in Podgórze; witnessing the murder of a Jewish couple by Poles; their emigration to Australia via Paris and Marseille; and emigration to the United States to join an uncle (an aunt and cousins had preceded them). Mr. W. shows photographs.
