Summary
Videotape testimony of Samuel P., who was born in Thessalonikē, Greece in 1914. He recounts his father's death when he was an infant; working from age seven; a Jewish philanthropist enabling him to attend a Jewish school; working as a film projectionist; German occupation; being sent to forced labor; escaping; returning to Thessalonikē to be with his family (he could have hidden); learning his mother and two sisters had been deported (they did not survive); his deportation to Auschwitz/Birkenau; slave labor; surgery to remove one testicle as part of specious medical experiments; recuperating from an infection; better treatment and work assignments from kapos who knew of his surgery; evacuation on January 18, 1945 to Sachsenhausen; a friend killing a guard; burying the body with two Dutch non-Jewish prisoners to conceal the deed, and reporting the guard abandoned them; transfer to Gusen; slave labor in an underground factory; liberation by United States troops on May 5, 1945; hospitalization for three months; transfer to a hospital in Paris; returning to Thessalonikē; marriage in 1962; and his daughter's birth. Mr. P. discusses pervasive painful memories and dedicating his life to working with children.
