Summary
Videotape testimony of Pearl B., who was born in Rozwadów, Poland in 1921. She recalls attending school in Jastkowice; her mother's death when she was five; her father's remarriage; cordial relations with non-Jews; her oldest brother's emigration to the United States in 1939; German invasion; many fleeing to the Soviet zone; obtaining food illegally from local Poles; hiding family valuables with Polish neighbors; her father's and brother's deportation to a labor camp; their release after six months; being beaten by two Ukrainians; receiving help from a former teacher; a round-up of Jews in July 1942; being hidden by a Pole; obtaining false papers from a priest; volunteering for forced labor in Germany using the false papers; being taken to Sandomierz, then Częstochowa; transport to Grevenbroich; factory work; obtaining extra food working as a housekeeper; a severe illness which left her partially blind; working in Düsseldorf; regaining vision after a fall; being condemned to death for defying an SS order; bribing guards to release her; moving to Jülich; joining a labor brigade; being identified as an escapee; being saved when the executioner was killed in an Allied bombing; and liberation by United States troops.
