Videotape testimony of Philip P., who was born in Kamʹia︠n︡e Pole (Kamenka), Ukraine in 1925. He recalls observing Jewish holidays and attending synagogue; a large, extended family; joining Komsomol; his father's draft in August 1941; German occupation; hiding with his mother, with assistance from non-Jewish neighbors, when most Jews were slaughtered; fleeing to a nearby village; returning with his mother and sister to Kamenka; anti-Jewish restrictions; forced labor in a forest; assistance from a German officer; transfer to forced labor outside Kamenka; escaping with his mother and sister with assistance from non-Jews; fleeing to Oleksandrivka; burying their Komsomol cards to prevent identification as Jews; traveling from Znamenka to Chechelivka, posing as non-Jews; his mother's brief arrest; fleeing to Shchorsk; his mother obtaining false documents; working on a collective farm; liberation by Soviet troops on October 30, 1943; reunion with his father in Kamenka; attending engineering school in Kirovohrad; military service; and marriage in 1952. Mr. P. discusses assistance from many non-Jews during German occupation; hiding his Jewish identity after the war; and sharing his experiences when his daughters were adults. Mr. P. and his sister Sofia visit areas of Kamenka and describe their experiences.
