Summary
Videotape testimony of Avraham H., who was born in Suceava, Romania in 1923, the youngest of eight children in a Hasidic family. He recounts working on the family farm; attending cheder and public school; one brother's emigration to Palestine in 1933; another brother's death in 1934; antisemitic harassment in school; attending the Vizhnitz yeshiva in summer 1938; Soviet occupation; anti-Jewish violence by Romanian troops in 1940; forced labor building roads; hiding valuables with German neighbors; a round-up of all Jews; train transfer to Ataki; incarceration in a synagogue; transfer to Mohyliv-Podilʹsʹkyī, Ozarintsy, Luchinets, Kopaygorod, and Stepanki; assistance from an Ukrainian family; transfer to the Sharhorod ghetto; working on nearby farms; smuggling extra food into the ghetto; his father's death; gangrene on his feet preventing him from working; his mother's death; he and his siblings working as woodcutters; volunteering in his brother's place for forced labor; transfer to the Mogilev ghetto; release due to his gangrenous feet; living with relatives in Mogilev; returning to Sharhorod with the assistance of the Judenrat; work in an apple orchard; observing Soviet prisoners of war in worse condition then the Jews; hiding in a bunker during the German retreat; liberation by Soviet troops; returning home; recovering family property; working the family farm; illegal emigration with a sister via Bucharest to Palestine in 1947; interdiction by the British; incarceration in Famagusta; military training with the Haganah; assistance from UNRRA; and serving in the Palmaḥ in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.
