Portfolio of documentary photographs created by Lorry Salcedo-Mitrani that document communities and individuals of African descent in Peru and Brazil, 1985-1995, and printed in 1998. The images comprised part of an exhibit organized by the Franklin H. Williams Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, New York, 1995. Captions on the verso of the photographs include a title for the image, in addition to the location and date of its creation. Images include formal and informal portraits of individuals, couples, and groups of people.
Images of Brazil come from the northeastern states of Bahia, Maranhão, and Pernambuco. Images of Bahia include a cattle market in Cachoeira; shoreline activities in Ilheus and on Maré Island; a commercial street in Maragogipe; religious activities and a market in Salvador; and women in the festival for the Our Lady of Purification Feast in Santo Amaro. Images of Maranhão include street scenes in Alcantara, in addition to scenes of daily activities in Castela and Cajueiro. Images of Pernambuco consist of shoreline activities at the beach of Calhetas in the municipality of Cabo de Santo Agostinho.
Images of Peru primarily come from the village of El Carmen, near Chincha, Ica Province, and depict religious processions and individuals inside and outside their homes.
