A railroad track-walker kills his daughter's seducer, a railway inspector, after her mother has already fled into the snow in shock and died of exposure, when the man refuses to have anything to do with the daughter. An example of Kammerspiel, or chamber-play, of naturalistic expressionism, and of psychological drama.
