Summary
The records consist of United States military intelligence reports relating to military, political, and foreign affairs in the Soviet Union. Included are reports on the civil war between Red and White troops, intervention by foreign troops following assumption of power by the Bolsheviks, the organization of the Red Army, the purge of Red Army officers, the pact with Germany, preparation for war, and the surprise attack by Germany. The intelligence reports are based upon interviews with military and government officials, surveillance of activities of political parties, and extensive eyewitness coverage of military action. The documents are from Record Group 165, Military Intelligence Files, Russia, in the National Archives.
