Summary
Videotape testimony of Kurt I., who was born in 1922 in Dillich, Germany, a small town near Kassel. He describes his family history in Dillich; the rapid growth of antisemitism beginning in 1933; and his parents' move to Kassel in 1936, when he left for Hannover to be an apprentice cook. Mr. I. tells of Kristallnacht in Kassel; his transport, with his family, to Terezín; life in Terezín; and his and his mother's deportation to Auschwitz, where they were interned in the family camp. He recounts his separation from his mother; his transfer to Schwarzheide; the death march from Schwarzheide to Terezín in 1945; and his postwar emigration to the United States. The only member of his family to survive, Mr. I. relates his feelings about a return trip, accompanied by his children, to Germany.
