Isorni recounts his 1971 campaign for election to the Académie française to fill the vacant chair left by Jérôme Carcopino. He ultimately fails, and Roger Caillois is elected in his stead. But in the course of his writings about the Académie Isorni describes many of its members, past and present, as well as details concerning the probable cause of his failure, which revolved around his political involvement in "pétainisme" and "gaullisme."
