Biographical / Historical Note
John Fothergill (1676-1745), born in Yorkshire, was a Quaker preacher and farmer. With his first wife, Margaret Hough (1677-1719), he had a son, John Fothergill (1712-1780), who became a celebrated English physician as well as a plant collector and philanthropist.
Summary
Holograph diary of Fothergill's travels to Barbados, Jamaica, and the mid-Atlantic colonies, almost entirely devoted to his attendance at numerous Quaker meetings. Fothergill records cities visited, the distances traveled each day, and the names of those Friends with whom he stays. In addition, he comments on each Quaker service he attends, noting the quality of the meeting and the number of attendees. Towns visited include Philadelphia, Brandywine, Burlington and New York City. He also records a conflict between the Quaker meeting in Easthampton, Delaware and the local justices.
