Includes excerpts from: Emile, Nouvelle Heloise, Du Contrat Social, Confessions, and other works by Jean-Jacques Rousseau; Essays, and History of England by David Hume; Lectures on Rhetoric by Hugh Blair; Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos; Sur la Peinture by Anton Raphael Mengs; Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful by Edmund Burke; an unidentified work by Jean de la Bruyère; and other short verses, anecdotes, and excerpts from works on natural philosophy, education, rhetoric, grammar, and art.
