Summary
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 57 sentimental, serious, and lighthearted poems, dated between 1825-1832, on such subjects as death and mortality; friendship; and military valor. Several of the poems are addressed to the Literary Society of Friends and adopt a lighthearted tone; Letter, for example, gently mocks ill attendance and lack of punctuality at their meetings. Other titles include The Desert; Ode To Lord Byron; Nelson; Stanzas Written On The First Pages of a Lady's Album; Graveyard; and To My Friend Richard Clarance On His Leaving England To Settle At The Cape Of Good Hope. In a preface dated 1832 Aug 12 ; the author explains that he decided to collect his poems together in this volume for the benefit of his "lady-friends"; imagines his poems as his children; declares that most of his poems were written before his twentieth year; and explains that most of his poems were written for the literary society of the religious Society of Friends to which he belonged; several are addressed to his friend George Herron.
