Summary
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of about 200 entries of primarily sentimental, elegiac, moral, and philosophical verse and prose, on such subjects as love, solitude, virtue, and grief. The volume includes prose excerpts from the works of Samuel Johnson; Giovanni Battista Zappi; and François-René de Chateaubriand, as well as a letter from Don Juan Padilla to his wife before his execution and an Enigmatical description of a mountain. The verses in the volume include one on virtue; another on the grave; a translation of Richard West's Elegy to Gray; and an elegy by William Shenstone. A substantial number of the entries are in French and Italian. Laid into the volume is a page of travel notes, on the reverse of which is an address to George Jones, Esq., 10 New Cavendish Street, Portland Place, London.
