Summary
Maurice Amaraggi takes us on a personal tour of the modern port city, which for centuries was a cosmopolitan Jewish center. A great fire in 1917 almost leveled Salonika, and its Sephardic community was destroyed in the Holocaust. Amaraggi interviews survivors and other residents. In the 21st century, few remember the Ladino language; school children must be taught that their city was once Jewish; and Harry Potter replaces French literature in the bookstore. Includes footage from the 1938 film "Carmen, la de Triana."
