John White Chickering was secretary of the Massachusetts and Congressional Temperance Societies from 1870 until his death in 1888.
In 1873, there were four branches of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers: the Eastern Branch in Togus, Me., the Central Branch in Dayton, Ohio, the Southern Branch in Hampton, Va. and the Northwestern Branch in Milwaukee.
