Biographical / Historical Note
The L'Etrusco, owned by Home Riggs Popham, was active in the Canton trade. When it reached Ostend after its 1792 voyage, it was seized by the English as a prize and towed to London, as Popham was considered by the government to have violated the East India Company's trading monopoly. The court case that followed was not settled until 1805; Popham received only a fraction of his loss as compensation.
Summary
Printed legal form, completed in manuscript, binding Home Riggs Popham, Charles de Constant de Rebecque, and Jean Baptiste Piron to make payments in sterling to John Reid, the captain of the L'Etrusco, and Charles Long in London. The bond is payable in London and addressed to Robert Charnock & Co. of Ostend.
