Summary
Album of graphite drawings of castles and scenery in England, by an unidentified French artist. With few exceptions, the artist has drawn one view per leaf. All of the drawings appear finished, with significant detail and shading. The majority of drawings are clearly labeled, in concise French text, directly below the drawing; some of the drawings note the year, 1843.
Most drawings depict views in and around London, Kent, and Windsor, including Green Park and Hyde Park, Rochester Castle, All Saints Church in Maidstone, a church at Tunbridge Wells, Syon House, several smaller houses on the Thames near Richmond, Windsor Great Park, Windsor Castle, and Eton College. Views in the remainder of the album depict castles throughout Britain. These include Taymouth Castle, Raglan Castle, Ludlow Castle, Witley Court, Kenilworth Castle, Alnwick Castle, and the Bodleian Library (Oxford). While some of the drawings depict landscapes, the primary subject is architectural. Only a single drawing, of Hyde Park, depicts figures (with horses and carriages as well).
