Summary
We study existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions to an equation of mixed type which models plasma equilibrium. The equation can be classified as a two-way diffusion equation; such equations often appear in physics. We use a variational method to obtain existence and uniqueness. Hypoellipticity is used to obtain regularity. By studying the the time-dependent problem we obtain an explicit relative fundamental solution to our equation, with a view to studying a singular perturbation problem connected with it.
