Mary E. Stannard was found dead at Rockland in Madison, Connecticut, on September 3, 1878. Mary's Methodist pastor Herbert H. Hayden was accused of murdering her. The trial went on for more than 3 months, and the jury did not reach a unanimous verdict. Pastor Hayden was released upon payment of a minimal bond and never retried for the crime.
